Hello Folks,

We planned to upgrade Oracle 10g (10.2.0.4.0) to Oracle 11g (11.2.0.4.0),its non rac database running on HPUX with ASM

I want to break upgrade in 2 parts -

- ASM upgrade

-DB upgrade

while upgrade ASM (10.2.0.4.0) facing some challenges, like i followed

installing oracle 11g grid infra, then upgrading asm

but while 11g grid infra its not detecting active running 10.2.0.4.0 asm instance which i need to upgrade

after some attempts it installed oracle 11g grid software(selected upgrade -3rd option),but not upgraded asm

in logs and in gui ,-migrate asm-?false appeared

please let me know if you face this

or better please share steps to upgrade 1og to 11g non rac db instance (no messy oracle document please,i gone through many of them found not helping)

if you done this activity, steps you followed seems may be helpful

Thanks in advance

There isn't really anything to upgrade with ASM. If you've installed GI, just create an ASM instance and point the asm_diskstring to the disc devices you are using. It should discover and mount the disc groups.

That having been said, installing GI 11.2.0.4 is rather silly. It is already out of premier support. What's wrong GI 12.1.0.2?

Thanks John,

I will update again details about existing setup
Oracle 10g(10.2.0.4.0) running on HPUX non rac/standalone with asm (all db related files on asm),3 instance running on same server
oracle home is common for all 3 instance and asm instance

its client requirement we have to upgrade 11gr2
as i mentioned 11g grid installation went through smoothly but refer to documentation it should detect running asm instance(10g -instance ) already used by existing database and upgrade it to 11g as first part,if i follow different approach to documentation

how to handle asm instance in upgrade processes,it asm is not there i would simply upgraded 10g database to 11g which i have done many in non asm setup, without any need to install 11g grid infra software,as per document mentioned that it is required for asm upgrade to 11g

your suggestion as below ,seems assume there is no existing asm instance,in my case 10g asm instance is already present and all db files are mounted on this asm instance

>>just create an ASM instance and point the asm_diskstring to the disc devices you are using. It should discover and mount the disc groups.

Please clarify. When you say "oracle home is common for all 3 instance and asm instance", that seems to say the the db home is the same as the ASM home. This cannot be and I'm pretty sure that is not what you meant, but it is a point that needs clarification/confirmation.

In releases < 11.2, the ASM instance ran off the same binaries as the RDBMS instance. There was also a cut down version of the cssd shipped with the RDBMS binaries. So one Oracle Home was all you needed - though people would usually install two, if only so that they could be patched independently.

What OP has failed to understand is that you can't really upgrade an ASM instnce. All you do is start a new one, off the new Oracle Home, and configure it to find the same discs.

You might want to clarify this. I have never had a client stipulate a version for GI. Why should they? Is it possible that they do not realize that the RDBMS and GI are independent products?

Quote:
The Oracle Grid Infrastructure for a standalone server is the Oracle software that provides system support for an Oracle database including volume management, file system, and automatic restart capabilities. If you plan to use Oracle Restart or Oracle Automatic Storage Management (Oracle ASM), then you must install Oracle Grid Infrastructure before you install and create the database. Oracle Grid Infrastructure for a standalone server is the software that includes Oracle Restart and Oracle ASM. Oracle combines the two infrastructure products into a single set of binaries that is installed as the Oracle Grid Infrastructure home.

The answer is perfectly clear. Just to reiterate: releases <= 11.1.x, ASM was shipped with the RDBMS. In releases >=11.2.x, ASM is shipped with GI.

Are you sure that want to proceed? You could go to your client and explain that you need either some training or some consultancy support. He should not have a problem with that, but will definitely have a problem if you proceed with inadequate skills.

What is not clear in "If you plan to use Oracle Automatic Storage Management (Oracle ASM), then you must install Oracle Grid Infrastructure"?

Hi,

Have you search on Metalink for upgrade ASM??
Alternative Procedure To Upgrade ASM From Release 10.2 Or 11.1 To Release 11.2.0.# or To 12.1.0.1 On Unix/Linux Configurations (Standalone) Using ASM Role separation. (Doc ID 1645523.1)

You have to do aditional steps from 10.2 to 11.2. Read the MOS note and then reply to forum, if you have any problem.

What do you get from these:
crsctl stat res -t -init
crsctl stat res -t
Please make sure that you use [code] tags to enclose the output as I did above, described here How to use [code] tags and make your code easier to read

Have you read the MOS note, that i had sent in my previous post??
Why you copy the init and start de ASM instance??
To upgrade ASM 10.2 to 11.2, first of all you have to:

-remove current CSS service
-delete current ASM istance
--In previous you had install the GI software only

--In ASM old HOME, you have to deconfig old home, and in new home (11g) you have to configure new CSS e OHA
...... And some of the other steps to configure the new parameters in 11g GI (OHAS,etc)

Have you made some of this steps?

As per document shared/link followed
step 15) dont gives output
KFOD-00313: file not found
can still proceed further to next step or some issue in the installation

when changing arguments to include full path
KFOD-00313: No ASM instances available. CSS group services were successfully initilized by kgxgncin

Look, just start again. Do it from the beginning, and do it right. At the moment, you have installed GI 11.2.01 and RDBMS 11.2.0.4. That is an impossible combination.

Do what I suggested two weeks ago: install GI 12.1.0.2, then RDBMS 11.2.0.4.

Hi bas_vbs,

Before you doing something, you have to read the docs.
Have you made a search on google for the error?
As John Watson saied, you can't have this combination. you have two options, or install GI 11.2.0.4 or install GI 12, and then you can have your database in 11.2.0.4
